The Seven Deadly Attitudes: Doubt

According to the gospel of St John, Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to his disciples the Sunday after crucifixion.  One of Jesus's twelve disciples missed their master's visit. When Thomas heard the reports, he refused to believe Jesus had risen.  Once he saw Jesus, once he touched Jesus's wounds for himself, then he would believe.  A week later, Jesus appeared again to his disciples.  This time, Thomas was there to see and touch his master's body.  Even though his works earned him a sainthood, he was forever branded 'doubting Thomas'.

Today, when someone refuses to believe something others see plainly, the unbeliever is called a 'doubting Thomas'.  They are said to be blind to the obvious, over-cautious, excessively critical, stubborn or just plain slow.  Worst of all, they have no faith.  With faith, the logic goes, the doubting Thomas is condemned to a life of suspicion and indecision. Doubt is seen as anti-social, weak and pathetic.  Yet, in a sense, we're all doubting Thomas.

Imagine you went into work one morning to hear your colleagues say 'you just missed the boss' whose funeral you attended a week ago.  You'd probably tell them to pull the other one, it has rosary beads on it.  Granted your boss is not the Messiah, but most people would not take any
life-after-death story on faith.  Like Thomas, they'd want a bit more proof before changing their firmly held belief that the dead stay dead.  And why not?

Our concepts of truth and reality are built over a lifetime.  They're critical to health and safety.
If an African game-park ranger says lions are actually as tame as kittens, you'd still think twice about stepping out of a Land Rover with a ball of twine.

In fact, doubt is a fundamental ingredient of personal growth.  People who take what they hear on faith and never question generally accepted 'wisdom', are usually trapped by their beliefs.
I get many clients who hate their jobs.  They suffer aches, pains, insomnia, boredom, and stress.
Often, I suggest they switch careers.  Oh no, they couldn't do that.  Not now.  I'm too old, the economy stinks, and I'm not for anything else.  What do they base these depressing conclusions on?  Not much.  Certainly not on any attempt to find another job.  Maybe they are too old.  Or maybe they're highly experienced.  Maybe their industry is depressed.  Or maybe new opportunities are developing.  Maybe their job skills are obsolete.  Or maybe they translate well into another (eg. taxi drivers make excellent computer programmers).  Maybe is always better than definitely not.

We base our actions on set ideas about the world.  This knowledge of 'how things work' comes from an environment full of false or misleading information.  For a start, can you really trust what your parents told you?  Maybe they were wrong when they taught you life lessons like 'What you don't know wont hurt you.'  What about the experts?  Experts hardly agree on anything.  When they do agree, it usually doesn't last long.  History is littered with abandoned theories and ideas.  What about your experience?  Consider the enormous variety of human life.  Then consider how few people, places and ideas you've encountered. Its not terribly wise to draw general conclusions based on your limited experience.  Besides, we often believe what we want to believe, rather than what our senses tell us.  And our senses lie.  You can see something that's not there, or not see something that is.

Confused?  Good!  When you're trying to change your life to find health and happiness, you cant take anything for granted.  You need to doubt.  Your firmly held beliefs could very well be the only thing holding you back.  With doubt, at least you're thinking about things in a profound way.  St Thomas didn't hear about Jesus's reappearance and say, 'Rubbish!' and get on with his business. Nor did he say, 'Wow! Great! And blithely get back to spreading the word. He doubted. He prepared himself for a more profound and personal belief. When someone tells you, 'That's not the way we do things around here' or 'It'll never work', doubt them.  People who accept what they're told are open to manipulation.  If Thomas believed everything told to him on faith, he would have been susceptible to false prophets and others who wanted to destroy the early church.

Of course, doubting the way the world works is one thing.  Doubting yourself is another.
Or is it?  If anything, our beliefs about ourselves are even less reliable than our beliefs about the world.  Our concept of our abilities and basic worth is probably the most emotionally charged area of our thinking.  Self-knowledge is wide open to mistakes and misconceptions. When we're growing up, we normally accept someone else's opinion of what we're good at, what we're bad at, and when we're just plain hopeless.  Our experiences then confirm these judgements - or so we think.  We soon begin to believe that there are parts of our character we cant change.  That's 'the way we are'.  It's no surprise that some people can never seem to shake the lurking question 'Am I good enough?'  Deep down, they're convinced they aren't.

I sometimes see young clients struggling with their studies.  They're convinced they're terminally 'weak' in a specific area, like maths.  Before I hypnotise them, I'll challenge their self-beliefs.  Do you think a brilliant teacher can make a student love a subject, whereas a bad one kills it?  If you love a subject, are you usually good at it?  Have you ever had a brilliant maths teacher?  Can some students be really good at a subject, but incredibly bad at tests?  Are you any good at budgeting for a new purchase, like a skateboard?  So is it possible you could be good at maths if you were motivated enough?  I work to the same goal - implanting a seed of doubt - with smokers, weight-loss clients and clients who cant sleep.  Maybe you can give up smoking, lose weight, sleep soundly.  You just haven't learned how.  Yet.

Seen properly, self-doubt can be deliberating, rather than imprisoning.  It can set you free. All you have to do is doubt your own self-doubt.  Begin to see your ideas about yourself as fluid, subject to change and endless experimentation.  Maybe you'll always be unhappy or addicted or overweight or stupid or poor or lonely.  Maybe not.  To prepare the field for the seeds of change, remove expression of personal certainty.  Don't say I'm not the kind of person who...' or 'I'll always...'
How do you know?  Maybe by saying those things to yourself, you're making them true.  You'll never really know if you can change something until you try.  Maybe doubt is the path to the rich, rewarding, open-ended life of a true saint.  Robert Farago
