Questions and Answers (FAQ) Page
Q) What is Hypnosis?: A) Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation and concentration in which deeper parts of the mind become more accessible.
Q) How does hypnosis work?: A) Hypnosis works by changing the state of consciousness. During hypnosis, left brain awareness is reduced, while right brain awareness is increased.
In other words, conscious control of the mind is deminished, while subconscious awareness becomes heightened. Since it is the subconscious mind that holds the key to many of our problems, hypnosis makes it easier for spoken suggestions to reach the part necessary in order
for conscious behaviour and physical condition to change in a positive way.
Q) How can hypnosis help me?: A) Many different approaches can be used during hypnosis in order to help a person overcome their problems. However, perhaps two of those most widely used approaches are known as Direct Suggestion, and Hypno-analysis.
Direct Suggestion: (Suggestion Hypnotherapy) aims to present more appropriate positive suggestions to the subconscious mind, which, once accepted, alter the way it interprets events or situations during everyday life. Direct Suggestion can provide a rapid 'fix' and is frequently helpful for those who want to stop smoking, or biting their nails, or to overcome fear/panic/phobia. Direct Suggestion can also be very useful for those wanting to increase self-confidence, or self-esteem.
Hypno-analysis: (Analytical Hypnotherapy) is a method used to seek-out the root cause of a problem held deep within the subconscious mind. Free Association is frequently used during the analytic session, and the hypnotised subject is invited to relate whatever comes into their mind, and not to censor their thoughts. This is intended to help the person learn more about what he or she thinks and feels in an atmosphere of non-judgmental curiosity and acceptance. This technique can be useful in locating the memories of troublesome events experienced in earlier years, which, in-turn, have caused undesireable habits or behaviour problems to be carried through into adulthood, where, sometimes quite unexpectedly, they can re-surface causing all kinds of problems.
Basically, the subconscious mind tends to suppress upsetting memories, but the attached feelings still need an outlet; a way of finding release. This release may present itself in one or more of many different forms, for instance: blushing, hair pulling, depression, temper, alcohol addiction, sexual disfunction, relationship issues, stress, irritable bowel syndrome, raised blood pressure, weight problems, to name but a few.
During hypno-analysis, the hypnotised individual is guided on a journey of self-discovery to locate supressed memories. Once identified, these supressed memories can be brought into conscious awareness, where they are then re-assessed (analysed) and dealt with accordingly. Hypno-analysis can provide a slower 'fix', but considering that many of those who choose hypno-analysis tend to have quite complex issues, this really isn't so suprising. N.B. This type of therapy may also be known as regression-to-cause. Regardless of the approach used to help, therapy takes place in comfortable, safe, re-assuring surroundings.
Q) Does it take long to be hypnotised?: A) To hypnotise an individual, the therapist uses what's known as an induction, which can last anything from 5 to 25 minutes, depending on what works best for you. The entire process is likely to be very calming and relaxing, rather like when you naturally allow yourself to drift into a daydream.
Q) Will I be aware of what's happening during hypnosis?: A)The subconscious hears everything, even when we're deep and sound asleep. When it's time for us to wake from sleeping, the fact that we hear our alarm clock proves this! So the answer to this question is yes, you will be aware of everything.
Q) During hypnosis, will I still be in control?: A) During hypnosis, if you decide to open your eyes, move, speak, or do whatever, you are completely free and able to do so. At no time during hypnosis are you 'controlled' by your therapist. What's more, you can never be made to do, or say, anything against your will.
Q) During hypnosis, how will I feel?: A) For many people there is actually no such thing as a 'hypnotised' feeling. In fact, after being hypnotised, the vast majority of people insist that they did not consider themselves to have been hypnotised at all, often remarking that they didn't 'go under'. The fact is, just like anything else, hypnosis can take some getting used to, and it often takes a little practice before you're likely to become more in-tune with what to expect. However, as a general guide, throughout hypnosis you may enjoy sensations of heaviness, numbness, tingly fingers/toes, a feeling of floating, or whirling. It's also not uncommon to experience time distortion (usually in the ratio of around 2.5 to 1) meaning that after hypnosis is over, there is a feeling that much less time has passed than is actually the case. In other words, it's not uncommon for a 50 minute session of hypnosis to feel like it only lasted for 20! That said, and whatever the experience is like for you, please remember that it's highly individual, and that no two people are ever likely to experience hypnosis in quite the same way. Perhaps most importantly, whatever hypnosis is like for you, please rest assured that it's absolutely natural, and that you're perfectly safe.
Q) What if I don't wake up?: A) Getting stuck in hypnosis is a common mis-belief. In reality, it simply cannot happen. I mean, do you get stuck in sleep? The hypnotised state is a completely natural one, and if you were left in hypnosis by the therapist, you would either return to being fully alert quite rapidly, or fall more deeply asleep for a while, only to wake-up feeling refreshed after your little nap. There really is no such thing as being stuck in hypnosis.
Q) Can anyone be hypnotised?: A) In the clinical setting, most people who want to be hypnotised should experience no difficulty in achieving this. Hypnosis relies on co-operation between client and therapist. Therefore, once you feel sufficiently at-ease with your therapist to allow hypnosis to happen, it will. It's worth mentioning that, once in hypnosis, some people go much deeper than others, depending on their 'trance capacity'. Trance capacity is governed by several factors, including: genetic make up; state of mind; level of relaxation; and a willingness to relinquish continual control.
Q) Should I be concerned about hypnosis?: A) People often ask me whether there is any reason for them to be concerned about hypnosis, or when being hypnotised. My answer is always the same. Hypnosis is a proven therapeutic aid and a real power for good. A person who develops their ability to use hypnosis may expect to benefit through improved sleep, increased health and wellbeing. Undoubtedly the use of certain interventions by a non-trained or poorly-trained therapist may be undesireable, but in the hands of a properly trained expert such as myself, you are perfectly safe and secure. So there really isn't any reason for concern.
Q) Are there people who should not be hypnotised?: A) Specific diagnosed medical conditions, or the use of certain prescribed medication, may contra-indicate the use of hypnosis.
If you are considering using hypnosis, please consult your doctor for advice should you suffer with: diabetes, epilepsy, undiagnosed pain, asthma, or heart problems. Where psychotic individuals are concerned, care needs to be exercised, and analytical approaches such as regression-to-cause would not be used. The use of regression-to-cause or analysis is also contra-indicated for heart attack/stroke victims, and for those suffering with certain forms of depressive illness. In some instances it may be possible for therapy to proceed once specific written consent is obtained from your doctor.
Q) What if I'm too scared, or too shy to talk?: A) Please don't be put off by something like this. Sessions are conducted professionally, ethically, and in the strictest of confidence. You will be encouraged to talk freely and openly about your issues and will not be judged. What's more, talking things out before embarking on hypno-therapy can often help to lessen stress and make it easier to relax.
Q) Will I say or do something I don't want to during hypnosis?: A) You will never say or do anything during hypnosis that you wouldn't normally be happy to. Furthermore, if the therapist asks you questions that you find upsetting, or are unwilling to answer, you will either refuse to answer or come out of hypnosis.
Q) Will hypnosis change me as a person?: A) This all depends on exactly what you mean by 'change me as a person'. If you mean will hypnosis somehow brainwash you into not being yourself, then the answer is no. However, if you mean will hypnosis help you to become the person you want to be; free from the things that trouble you, then the answer is yes. In any case, it's all down to you, as you'll only change if you are prepared to allow this change to happen.
Q) Can hypnosis brainwash a person?: A) Certainly not. Anyone who tells you something like this has been watching too many old science fiction movies!
Q) Does hypnosis have side-effects?: A) I'm certain you'll be pleased to read that the side-effects of hypnosis are all good! In reality, perhaps the most widely reported side-effect of hypnosis is the increased ability to relax and enjoy a good nights sleep. Let's face it, in today's hi-tech environment, many of the health issues that we experience are brought about by tension, anxiety, and stress. So, just imagine how good it would be to throw away tension, abolish anxiety, and stamp on stress, even if only temporarily, thereby lessening their potentially health-damaging effects. O.K, so relaxation and improved sleep may not in itself solve all of your problems, but it may help you to change the way you cope with them. What's more, learning to relax can make you far less likely to suffer from headaches, migraines, strokes, heart-attacks, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and many others.
Q) What is the speed of results?: A) Results may not always be apparent immediately, but sometimes they can be! Some people say they are aware of improvement after one session, whilst others say it takes a while longer. As a general guide, it's likely that you'll notice change beginning to happen gradually and perhaps in rather subtle ways. If there were just one piece of advice that I could offer in this instance, it would be to allow the natural processes of change to happen in their own time and in their own way, rather than trying to force things by expecting too much, too soon. Remember, the subconscious mind is full of suprises!
Q) Stage hypnosis appears spontanious. Can hypnotherapy fix things fast?: A) No.
What you see in a stage show must not be compared with that which takes place in a therapeutic setting. Stage hypnosis is carried out for entertainment value, while hypnotherapy seeks to assist those with real problems. By the same token, any results achieved in a stage setting are only likely to last a relatively short time, or at least until the end of the performance. Hypnotherapy aims to provide lasting solutions which can often, but not always, take a little longer to achieve. Still, aren't good things worth waiting for?
Q) Does hypnosis cure?: A) Hypnosis does not 'cure'. The word 'cure' implies that there is something physically or mentally wrong that requires surgical proceedure, or medicine, to correct. Hypnosis does not provide a surgical proceedure, nor does it provide a chemical solution. Instead, hypnosis helps you to discover reasons behind deeply-held attitudes or beliefs. Once identified, these reasons can be challanged and changed. To some people this may all sound like such a simple process that they are bound to ask why they can't just do it all by themself; not bothering to ask for professional help. My answer to this would have to be that, without the skills of a professionally trained expert, you'd most likely find the process rather like trying to fly a jumbo jet with no previous experience! In effect, you need an expert to show you how; to guide you along a safe and well-recognised path, making sure that you reach your destination successfully.
Q) How many sessions are required?: A) Often, there are far too many factors to consider for me to be able to answer this question with any degree of accuracy. For straightforward case it may be possible to find a solution in just a single session, but then what exactly is a straightforward case? Sometimes what appears to be straightforward on the face of things can actually turn out to be much more complex, and vice versa. What I can say is that a properly trained therapist, such as myself, is able to use knowledge and expertise in order to offer an idea of perhaps how many sessions may be required, but this can and does alter as therapy proceeds.
Q) Is hypnotherapy always successful?: A) Whilst hypnosis is generally extremely effective, as with any other form of therapy, results cannot be guaranteed.
Q) What happens at my initial session?: A) Your initial session lasts for roughly two hours. Two hours may seem like rather a long time, but it actually passes very quickly. Your initial session offers you the opportunity to speak freely and openly about the reasons for your visit. During your initial session you will also complete a client questionnaire. The information you include in your answers will assist me when deciding upon a suitable plan of therapy. When you come to my practice, I take a complete history covering every area of health: operations, meds, previous treatments, and more. The case history also includes details of diet, alcohol consumption, exercise regime, work, interests and hobbies, family, relationships, worries, fears, emotional factors, childhood and anything else that may be relevant.
Q) What if I can't afford therapy?: A) As far as possible, I deny no one of therapy on purely financial grounds. Call and we can discuss how to spread costs so that they become more manageable. It's worth considering that in straightforward cases, one or two sessions may be all that's required. Rest assured that therapy will be terminated just as soon as you achieve the results you desire You will never be expected to attend un-necessary sessions.
Q) Do you offer a drop-in service?: A) Just like your doctor or dentist, you will need to make an appointment before attending. Although I am unable to offer you instant assistance should you arrive un-announced, I can usually arrange for you to see me quite quickly. Should you wish to book, please telephone or email for assistance. Please do not call at the practice in-person without having first booked an appointment, as your arrival is only likely to disturb another clients therapy. Your understanding in this matter is appreciated.
Q) What are the session fees?: A) Full details of session fees is available by telephoning or emailing my practice. You can also find out more by viewing the fees page.
Q) Free chat - what's this?: A) I am happy to offer a free initial 15 to 30 minute chat, either by telephone or at my consulting room (preferable), during which you can ask questions and decide if hypnotherapy is right for you.
Q) What is the session length?: A) Those booking for direct suggestion, or regression-to-cause will attend an initial session lasting between 110 and 130 minutes. Following sessions are booked as required and each lasts approximately 60 minutes. Those booking for smoking cessation usually attend for a single session lasting in the region of 120 to 180 minutes, depending on the length of the custom-made intervention. Those booking for past-life regression (PLR) can expect to attend an initial session lasting approximately 60 minutes, followed by a further session lasting approximately 90 to 120 minutes. All durations are approximate, as some sessions inevitably overrun due to the individual nature of each clients issues
Q) Does your practice have disabled Access?: A) My consulting room is situated on the first floor and it will be necessary for you to climb a single flight of stairs in order to gain access to the consulting area. If you are unable to navigate stairs, please consider a domicilary visit (below).
Q) Domiciliary visits (housecalls): A) For those affected by personal mobility or health-related issues, I do make housecalls. I also make housecalls for those who are genuinely unable to reach me due to transport issues. I make no additional charge for this service provided that you live within a 5 mile radius of my practice. Outside of this 5 mile radius, an additional charge is made to cover the cost of fuel and travelling time. Please call to discuss the likely costs before booking. It's important to realise and accept that for hypnosis to be most effective, certain core-conditions are desireable. Before booking a home visit you should ask yourself whether you have somewhere for us to discuss your issues privately. Also, whether you are able to provide a suitable quiet, peaceful atmosphere, free of disturbance from personal callers, telephone, and so forth, throughout a period of hypnosis lasting perhaps 50 to 90 minutes.
Q) Does your practice have toilet and washroom facilities?: A) A w/c and washroom is conveniently located next to my main consulting area.
Q) Does your practice have parking facilities?: A) Under normal circumstances there is ample free parking on the public highway directly outside my practice. However, this can vary depending on the time of day, or day of week. Be prepared to park and walk depending on traffic conditions.
Q) What is G.P referral?: A) A medical doctor may refer their patient to a privately-practising therapist, such as myself, should they consider it appropriate. This practice holds a registered NHS referral number, which means that should your doctor refer you to me, I can then receive payment for my services directly from the NHS.
Q) Is there anything else I should know?
Yes. A professionally trained therapist has a duty to ensure the best possible level of care for their client. However, as my client, you have responsibilities too. Directly below you'll see a list containing useful information, including those matters which require your fullest attention.
Your appointment: Please arrive promptly for your appointment, or even just a few minutes early. It's good advice to suggest that you allow yourself a little extra time when preparing to visit for therapy, as this may help you to arrive feeling more calm and relaxed. Try to attend your appointment wearing comfortable clothing and be prepared to remove footwear during therapy.
Session Fees: Please settle session fees at the end of each appointment. Payment for each completed session is payable in cash, or by cheque, accompanied by a valid cheque guarantee card. Unfortunately, I am unable to accept credit cards at this time, although I can arrange for you to pay, in advance, via Paypal, should you prefer.
Evening or domiciliary (home) visits: Evening, or home visits (when available) may be liable to an additional fee. Please call for advice.
Broken Appointments: Should you be unable to keep your appointment, please telephone to cancel immediately, preferably at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled appointment start time. Failure to do so may result in a the full fee for the missed appointment being charged.
Specific Medical Conditions (contra-indications): Should you suffer from a specific medical condition (diagnosed or otherwise) you may be required to produce a letter of consent from your medical doctor before I am able to proceed. I'll be happy to advise.
Prescribed Medication: Prior to therapy, please inform me if you are taking any prescribed medication. It is the responsibility of each client to ensure that their session of therapy does not interfere with the routine administration of medication. Should it be necessary to bring prescribed medication to your therapy session, you will be responsible for its correct administration.
Eating and drinking before a session: You are advised to eat and drink sensibly before attending a therapy session. Please refrain from consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to an appointment.
Homework: Be prepared for me to ask you to practise relaxation and self-hypnosis techniques between therapy sessions. Also, be prepared to keep a written log of all progression and improvement, no matter how major or minor the changes may appear.
Discussing your issues: If therapy is to progress more rapidly, it helps if my client talks freely and openly about their problems. It's good advice to suggest that you tell me everything, no matter how trivial or un-connected you may consider it to be.
Discussing you progress: During your time in therapy, please discuss progress as often as you wish. Remember, as a client you should enter into therapy with an appropriate attitude. Please don't expect that by placing yourself and your problems into my care, that they'll immediately disappear. Contrary to popular belief, I don't have some form of magic wand that I can wave in order to make everything go away! In reality, you'll be required to display genuine commitment and determination toward reaching your desired goals.
Disclosing to others: Clients are advised not to disclose the content or progress of their therapy with others, until such time that they have successfully completed therapy. Remember, your personal truth is your own reality.
Talking about your concerns: Should you have concerns about any aspect of therapy, never be afraid to ask. I am a good listener and welcome your input.
Physical contact during therapy: As a general guide and during a session of direct suggestion hypnosis, no physical contact is made between therapist and client. However, some techniques may require the therapist to momentarily touch their client on the shoulder, or perhaps to gently take hold of their arm, wrist, or hand. In the event that such contact (known as 'anchoring') is appropriate, you will be advised before hypnosis commences, and again before the action takes place.
Violent and/or abusive behaviour: This practice will not accept violent and/or abusive behaviour. In the event of any such occurance, the session will be immediately terminated. The fee for the terminated session will be charged in-full.
Client escorts: Clients may be escorted to their session by a member of their family, or by a friend, should they so wish. However, throughout the therapy session, the accompanying individual will be asked to remain in the nearby waiting area, thus ensuring client confidentiality and privacy.
Therapy for minors Individuals under the age of 18 are accepted for therapy at my discretion. Those accepted are to be accompanied by an appropriate adult; parent or legal guardian, who will then be required to counter-sign all consent forms before therapy can commence. In the case of children up to, and including the age of 15, an approprite adult may sit-in throughout session should the child agree. The escorting adult must then be prepared to take part in the session.
Personal belongings: A client is responsible for all personal belongings, or valuable items, brought to a therapy session.
Practice cancellations: In the unlikely event that a pre-booked appointment has to be cancelled, I will do my best to arrange a suitable alternative appointment.
Data protection: In-keeping with the data protection act, my practice records client notes in paper format and does not store sensitive information on computer. Should you wish to view the information about yourself held on record, you are free to do so at any time. However, please rest assured that my notes contain only a brief and truthful representation of each session. Client notes are securely filed and destroyed after the designated period.
Ethics: As a member of the Hypnotherapy Association I abide by a strict code of ethics. Confidentiality is the very bedrock of this code, and I will never reveal the confidences entrusted to me. However, there are certain circumstances where exclusions to confidentiality do apply.
Any other questions?: Should you have a question, the answer to which is not detailed above, please contact me by email or phone for advice.
